Having only participated in the planning and breeding of one litter to date, my considerations may seem idealistic and theoretical to some, but I do feel I need to put into writing my views - if only to be able to one day go back and correct them. I take the overall situation of the breed and its future very seriously, and set my goals, such as they are at this point, accordingly.

Health

Summarizing the Finnish Basenji Breeders' meeting of 2015, a healthy dog is one that needs veterinary services for not much more than mandatory vaccinations, has no medical condition made worse by breeding, and is active also in its senior years. Mental and physical well-being of a dog are of equal importance.

Temper

While temperament is something that can be supported and improved on by breeding, the influence of dam, littermates, breeder and eventually the future home and its people also has great significance.
